Nutshell CRM was founded in 2009 by Guy Suter, Andy Fowler, Lindsay Snider and Ian Berry. The app was launched in November 2010 as a solution aimed at small businesses with a “neighborly” approach to support. The company is privately-held; in 2015, Joe Malcoun was brought on as full-time CEO. Nutshell is headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Nutshell is a sales automation platform aimed at small businesses. It offers an attractive user interface with customizable dashboards and touts its simple-yet-effective functionality for contact management, sales process management, team collaboration, reporting and performance tracking and accommodating approach towards tech support and usage limits. In each of Nutshell’s three subscriptions tiers, users are provided unlimited contacts and storage, and tech support via email, live chat and phone are all included (though users of the most expensive plan, Pro+, get priority service for email and live chat. A traditional challenge for CRMs is encouraging user adoption -- more complete data from all members of a team means analytics and reports more accurately describes activity and performance. Nutshell’s interface is simple, clearly labeled, customizable by user and allows each sales rep to arrange relevant data front and center. Nutshell doesn’t allow 2-way email, but it syncs with Gmail and Outlook, so those users won’t need to forward or BCC their emails to Nutshell in order to maintain an email log. Nutshell also allows users to make and log calls, though the CRM doesn’t provide a softphone or built-in VoIP integration; rather, users can connect either their Skype account or a RingCentral account, which can be opened from within Nutshell, and by clicking a phone number in the contact’s profile (in the People or Company page) the VoIP app will begin dialing the number. The call details will be logged within Nutshell. Nutshell allows calendar integration. The CRM integrates with G-Suite, which includes Google Calendar, which allows Events in Google Calendar to be added as Activities in Nutshell and vice versa. Deletion also applies, as does adding or removing participants from Activities/Events. Nutshell also allows Apple Calendar and Outlook Calendar users to subscribe to a feed of their Nutshell Activities, which will appear in the latter calendars though 2-way integration doesn’t seem to be present. Nutshell also allows custom notifications on a wide range of criteria which appear in-app, via email or mobile push. These can relate to lead assignment, watched leads, activities, steps, tasks, mentions or comments. Nutshell reports, out of the box, allow sales reporting based on segments like product, assignee, territory, source or tag within a custom time frame. It produces measurements on total dollar value, average value per week, average time open and average lead value. Nutshell also produces similarly diverse reports on Losses, New leads, Forecasts in addition to reports with custom filters. The Pro subscription further enables Activity and Funnel reports. Users are able to save reports. Nutshell offers integrations with G-Suite, Microsoft Exchange, MailChimp, Olark, Zendesk, Wufoo, Quote Roller, RightSignature, PandaDoc and Highrise. They provide their API for developers to integrate their own software. In addition, Nutshell offers a mobile app. Like many CRMs, Nutshell offers trigger-based automations based on record creation or update, notably within a sales pipeline. Pipelines are accessed within the user settings listed as ‘Processes’; triggers can pertain to specific pipelines or as overlay processes, which are triggered when specific products, competitors or sources are attached to leads. Users can also deliberately create delays that can be applied to specific deals. Nutshell is an affordable CRM with a lower monthly cost per user even when when billed month-to-month. On an annual contract, it’s Pro plan offers considerable tools for sales automation and reporting with a low learning curve for CRM newbies and an approachable interface to entice end users to adopt the platform. It’s a great small business option with highly attentive support -- for companies without a complex sales process that want an effective platform with a short onboarding time, Nutshell is an excellent option.
